On the Hawaiian coast, Wai'olu Residence overlooks an enticing expanse of clear blue water. This cosy villa is home to an extended family that enjoys island life to the fullest. The warmth of the rooms radiates from the images and leaves no doubt that it is blissful living here in a place that can amaze you every day.
It was de Reus Architects and Philpotts Interiors who jointly designed this expansive home. From the outset, all living spaces were intended to overlook Uluweuweu Bay and Kikaua Point, two central elements of the local natural environment - which is besides incredibly beautiful. The name of the project also has its origins in the location. ‘Wai’ means ‘fresh water’ and ‘olu’ translates as ‘attractive, soft and friendly’. Thus, the house has clearly not stolen its name, and this is reflected in its design as well. The house has several inviting terraces on which the residents can enjoy a spectacular setting in the midst of unspoilt authenticity.
The heart of the house clearly revolves around the people who can call this place their home.
The design of Wai'olu Residence was largely inspired by John Ruskin and William Morris: two important figures of the arts-and-crafts movement. They were writers and artists respectively and both made significant contributions. We see a reflection of this aesthetic movement in, among other things, the natural materials, and the rustic simplicity of the house. For example, a large amount of wood was clearly used in the design. Not only that, but the use of handicrafts and a focus on the human spirit point in the direction of this inspiration. The cosy interior also makes it very pleasant to stay inside this impressive building. Whether having conversations in one of the many inviting armchairs or gathering in the large kitchen, the heart of the house clearly revolves around the people who can call this place their home. Wai'olu Residence is a home that definitively confirms everyone's positive idea of Hawaii. We will especially remember the remarkable inspiration that led to this wonderful result and the moving nature on which this entire concept was based.
