This impressive home in California, United States includes no less than three separate structures. The newest addition was named Art House: a reference to the residents’ growing art collection that cannot be missed. The goal is to receive guests here in a beautiful environment that stimulates creativity. If you ask us, this was anything but a challenge too big.
In this inspiring project, the team of Buttrick Projects A+D was responsible for the architecture and interior. The clients were already living in their home for twenty years when suddenly the adjoining lot was put on the market. They immediately saw a perfect opportunity to extent their current home, and so it was done. In the meantime, it was time to carry out this most recent addition, and for this they relied on the services of Buttrick Projects A+D. Already soon it became clear that it would concern an inverted layout. Namely, the bedrooms face the street, whereas the living area and kitchen look out on the back of the property. The outdoor space contains a cute swimming pool and garden. On the inside, they convincingly focused on dynamic connections. For example, the living area has large glass sliding doors that reduce the border with outdoor to a minimum. Furthermore, the team aimed to develop a vertical tension by placing a suspended loft at the top.

As the name clearly suggests, art is the glue that connects all the different aspects of the home. Because of this, all the rooms contain at least some works of art, ranging from paintings to objects. In this way, the rather neutral basis of the interior is to a pleasant degree complemented with colourful accents in the form of works of art. Art House was designed with the greatest attention, not only in the aesthetic but also in the practical field. For example, the second floor is encased in perforated sink, which reduces heat retention. With the same goal in mind, the team incorporated cement-bound panels as well. Regarding the aesthetic choices of materials, it is mostly the green-grey limestone that catches the eye since it connects the main floor to the outdoor patio. Art House is a wonderful property where both the exterior and interior are striking. They developed a design that considers the elements in a thoughtful way, but also the aesthetic choices exemplify an obvious emotional direction. With an excellent collection of art works, this home is one that we will not forget quickly. Want to get enchanted by more impressive projects and inspiring architecture?
