This is not the first time we write about Sergi Comellas. This is no surprise, because time and again, his work is more than worthwhile. This time, we asked him some questions about one of his recent projects, House in Tbilisi. The visualisations already show a light and spacious environment that is a joy to reside in.
Comellas immediately starts by telling us how he got this commission. ‘This project was requested by some very special clients who contacted the studio via our social networks. A few years ago, it was unthinkable to do projects remotely.’ In his projects, moreover, Comellas is always focused on the individual, both of the client and of his design. He explains that each conceptualisation process will always be slightly different from the previous one. Nevertheless, we asked him what the overarching style of his work is. ‘We like to take a minimalist approach,’ he says. ‘Nowadays you often see a warmer and lived-in minimalism rather than just pure design. A minimalism that reflects a lifestyle. We always ask clients at the start of a project to provide examples of what they like; this makes it easier to create the desired atmosphere.’
‘The orientation of a building and the use of natural light are always essential’
Every project has its priorities, so this time was no exception. ‘Here, it was important to preserve the existing structures, among others, and the connection with the surroundings was very important. To us, the orientation of a building and the use of natural light are always essential.’ Of course, Comellas knows the layout of the house like no other. ‘The residence has three floors. In the basement, we created rooms for a home cinema and a sauna, for example. On the ground floor you will find the day area, which consists of an entrance hall, a formal area and a family area. The clients asked for a space where they could hold their meetings and celebrations. The bedrooms, of course, are upstairs, each with its own walk-in closet and bathroom.’ It soon becomes clear to us that House in Tbilisi is equipped with everything.
We also asked Comellas about the materials used. ‘In this case, we went for light materials,’ he says. ‘We wanted the interior to be bright enough. A binding factor is natural stone, both inside and outside. This created a continuity in the spaces. In the upstairs areas, we mainly used wooden floor coverings. In addition, neutral colours are a perfect tool to highlight decorative elements, such as works of art or furniture.’ Comellas and his team also took great care in choosing furniture. ‘In this case, we opted for distinctive pieces that tied in with the minimalist style, but with a nod to a more classic style. For example, we chose the iconic Indochine chairs. To such elements, we add more contemporary pieces.’ With House in Tbilisi, Sergi Comellas has once again proved his worth. We are delighted that he and his team continue to provide clients with beautiful design, and hope that in the future he will continue to spread his way of working and unique eye to more people's homes.
