Our partner and furniture and kitchen expert Obumex has surprised us once again with a new top achievement. Discover here the re-edition of the iconic John Pawson kitchen that was presented in the brand new Obumex showroom in Tel Aviv.
25 years ago, the British architect and designer John Pawson designed his first kitchen – now a famous design – for Obumex. ‘For this iconic achievement, the architect strove for visual simplicity, minimalist design, perfect proportions, noble materials and expressive details,’ we hear from the kitchen company. This resulted in a series of 'kitchen components', including worktop, sink, hob, cabinets and so on, which can be used either freestanding or set against a wall. This created a strong partnership between John Pawson and Obumex. The latter recently celebrated its 60th birthday with a reissue of the iconic Pawson kitchen in its brand new showroom in Tel Aviv. ‘The décor in our new showroom is more like a home than a shop, fully in line with our philosophy,’ we hear from Obumex. So this was the perfect location to present the re-edition.
The result is a design that builds on the refined, minimalist architectural style of the first signature kitchen, with of course some new elements.
When the minimalist kitchen was introduced in 1996, it was revolutionary and it is still hugely popular today. ‘This inspired us to work with John Pawson again. The result is a design that builds on the refined, minimalist architectural style of the first signature kitchen, with of course some new elements.’ In the new design, Pawson continues the idea that a kitchen is composed of a series of parts that are more like full-fledged furniture than usual kitchen components. The individual elements are functional, but also have an aesthetic purpose to create atmosphere. ‘Cooking, eating and cosiness should go hand in hand. Exaclty that warm, homely feeling at home, together with timeless elegance, discreet luxury and comfort, is one of the starting points in the design of every Obumex kitchen.’ The innovative and atypical character of the new Pawson kitchen is also reflected in Obumex's new Tel Aviv showroom. ‘Much more than a “showroom of the range”, it has become a place where the focus is on creating a homely feeling. Whereas in classic showrooms several kitchen setups stand side by side, this shop is all about a single kitchen, one living space with library, one dining room as a meeting place.’
