A luxurious penthouse with all the qualities of a traditional home. That is the simplistic description of Studio Munge’s project Penthouse on the Esplanade. However, there is more to this elegant duplex apartment. It tells the story of a family that likes to surround themselves with friends and enjoys a neutral colour palette with bold art.
Studio Munge is a Canadian studio that focuses on creating luxurious interiors. Alessandro Munge founded the agency in 1997 which has since become internationally renowned. Alessandro's vision is to design interiors that tell a story and appeal to the emotions. The clients of the Penthouse on the Esplanade project were concerned about the transition from a traditional home to a penthouse. That is why their new dwelling was equipped with the same residential comforts. These include ample storage space, room to receive guests and plenty of outdoor space thanks to the surrounding 185 square metre terrace. As a result, Penthouse on the Esplanade offers everything from a traditional home in a sleek, modern penthouse format.
It offers everything from a traditional home in penthouse format.
The interior architects opted for an open plan where the various spaces merge seamlessly into one another. The house had to give the residents a light, orderly and spacious feeling. Luxurious elements such as designer furniture were certainly not forgotten. The colour palette is neutral with the exception of a Costa Azura see-through fireplace in dark marble. This is a rather dominant element that separates the dining and living room. Another striking element is the sculptural spiral staircase that leads from the sitting room to the library and bedrooms. It adds a dynamic component to the rooms. Together with the clients, Studio Munge searched for works of art for the building. These works had to be able to define the space as well as allow for decorative flexibility. Works by Shelley Adler, Barbara Cole, Joshua Jensen Nagle and Edward Burtynsky were placed in the house. Through the integration of personal works of art, selected in close cooperation with the client, the Penthouse on the Esplanade project is given a personal touch. Once again, Studio Munge presents an elegant and personal project.
