Josh Jen is an architectural designer based in South Oxfordshire (UK). Besides architecture, he also focuses on fashion, surreal minimalism and fine art. He caught Imagicasa's attention with his Casa Chi project, a mid-century modern home that displays his innovative eye in an interesting way.
The idea behind this residence is the concept of a light capsule, which for Jen refers to a construction that captures sunlight, as it were, and thus provides maximum natural lighting in a home. The images of Casa Chi display the effect clearly and immediately. The house is bathed in light from various directions and openings, creating an illusion of endless space. The colours contribute to the open feeling, since both the walls and the ceilings are covered in a light shade that extends the incoming light. The floors are made of a light wood type that aligns with this. Spending time in this place is also an experience that brings warmth and glow. Another significant element is the applied texture on the walls and ceilings, which, among other things, shows how consciously Jen uses his materials.

The intention of this project was to develop a neutral and light whole that enhances the living experience, but is at the same time perceived as soft. The latter is reinforced by the choice of round and arch-shaped furniture and light installations. For instance, both the bedroom and the dining room are fitted with curved lampshades that add a lively touch to the spaces. The bedside tables and side table also refer to curved shapes through their cylindrical bases. Furthermore, the furniture includes some eye-catchers, such as the gigantic mirror and the striking wooden dining chairs. The rectangular forms of the chairs are in fine contrast to the otherwise curved character of the house.
Casa Chi is meant for the children of the sun. This modern house plays with the incoming daylight and transforms it into an indispensable aspect of the interior. Neutrality and light are joined here by curved forms and elegant statement pieces. With this project, Josh Jen shows us how consciously and deliberately he puts his designs together. And that is beautiful.
