- Image creation
Artificial Intelligence, shortly called AI, is increasingly finding its way into everyday life. In creative processes such as architecture and interior design as well, AI is nowadays being used. Apple, for instance, recently launched Gaudi, a so-called ‘neural architect’ that develops extraordinary 3D images. Imagicasa worked with one of these AI programs, and the results of that can be seen here.
Thanks to the recent evolution of artificial intelligence, more and more possibilities are being developed to digitally generate images. That also has consequences for architects and interior designers, who can use such programs to make visualisations. With the help of programs such as Midjourney and DALL-E, for example, you can generate images on the basis of a textual description. You simply describe your idea in a number of keywords and put them in the program, which transforms your unique idea into an image. Because these combinations vary, the end result is always a different work of art.
Concerning these keywords, there are many possibilities. You can for instance ask the software to create an image of an animal or an object with human characteristics, or edit elements on an existing picture. The programs can indeed develop images for a large number of linguistic combinations, and DALL-E even has some capacities of 3D rendering software. Furthermore, it can fill in the blanks when some information is missing, which is usually not the case for 3D rendering, where very detailed descriptions are required.
Researchers talk about ‘artificial serendipity’
For architects and interior designers, this software can be of great help. New design possibilities can easily be tested and provide inspiration, turning it into an accessible way to play with data and explore new ideas. Some researchers talk about ‘artificial serendipity’, meaning that AI offers a way to create new valuable things in an artificial and coincidental way. A number of architects already use AI in, for instance, urban planning. At Imagicasa, we tried out Midjourney, a program that easily transforms text into images. The program generated these beautiful and inspiring images, each with subtle differences. Midjourney is now available as a Beta version, and with a Discord account, you can try the program yourself.
At the moment, these programs of course still have their limitations, and it is hard to tell to what extent they will influence the world of interior and architecture. However, we are already very impressed by these results, and we believe that AI software will make a big difference in the future.
