Art, beautiful details, form and colour are central in this beautiful UWS Townhouse in New York designed by Gachot Studios. The talent behind this beautiful project is no stranger to Imagicasa and her readers. We already enjoyed a beautiful hotel design (Shinola hotel in Detroit) by Gachot Studios in our October edition of 2019.
The New York interior design agency treats each project as a unique expression and art is central in multiple realisations. Also in this UWS Townhouse, the designers fully opted for a unique interior filled with the most beautiful details and decoration and unique works of art as the house was decorated for a demanding couple of art collectors.
Gachot Studios designs townhouse where art, light and form are central
The beautiful historic townhouse is located on the Upper West Side in New York. Besides art, it is all about form and colour in this interior design. The owners wanted their home to look like a gallery to present their extensive and diverse art collection, which includes works from a 17th-century Rembrandt to contemporary pieces by Sophie Calle. ‘The owners wanted a home where art came first,’ said co-founder John Gachot in an interview with Elle Decor. ‘It was all about form, light, material and space. Even the furniture was treated like art.’ So the challenge for Gachot Studios was to achieve this and at the same time create a warm, humane and liveable space that would feel like a home as well as a gallery.
‘The owners wanted a home where art came first. Even the furniture was treated like art.’
Different textures and shapes as well as rich colours and materials provide a luxurious, playful and welcoming look while the works of art also come into their own in the interior design. For example, in one of the seating areas we find a work by Sophie Calle with lamps from Elan Atelier on both sides. In the office space there is a wall sculpture by Rana Begum and here we also find beautiful vintage pieces including a desk by Jean Prouvé and a chair by Jacques Adnet. The bookcase in the library and the dining table were specially designed by Gachot Studios. The latter is perfectly complemented by vintage chairs by Carlo de Carli and a chandelier by Serge Mouille. The result is a stylish, elegant and cosy home, perfectly designed for the art lovers and collectors who will be staying there. Image courtesy of Gachot Studios
