10AM Lofts began five years ago when founder Eva Papadaki discovered a six-storey industrial building from the 1970s in the Gazi district of Athens. Four lofts were designed and have since functioned as photo studios, film locations, event spaces and creative offices.
The industrial building was transformed into a heaven of peace and tranquillity.
The idea of transforming 10AM Lofts into a house for creative people came from a collaboration between Studio Andrew Trotter, Gavalas loannidou Architecture and Eva Papadaki. The next step was to transform the ground floor and basement as well as the two upper floors. Together, Studio Andrew Trotter, Studio Gavalas Ioannidou Architecture and founder Eva Papadaki worked as a team to transform a 500 m² venue, which functions as an event space and a penthouse, into a heaven of peace and tranquillity.
For the event space, the lower two floors of the building were gutted and the central patio opened up to connect the basement to the ground floor by means of a sculptural Corten steel staircase. A new black concrete floor was laid, new windows were installed and glass bricks were added to the façade. While the ground floor is mainly white and flooded with light, the basement is dark. Natural light enters through the cracks in the ceiling and the central patio, creating a dark, mysterious space. The space is multifunctional and easy to arrange. The room can be used as a whole, or as smaller individual rooms.
The concrete stairs lead from the entrance area to a mezzanine office. The rear space has a seven-metre long kitchen for communal meals. One part of the kitchen is mobile and can be placed in front of the other for show cooking.
The penthouse is located on the two upper floors. The walls and ceiling were covered with lime plaster and lime paint to give a feeling of raw luxury. The living room, dining room, kitchen and study with a sofa bed are on the first floor. Also on this floor is the large bathroom with a wall of windows that can be opened completely. Thanks to the large windows, you have a great view of the Acropolis when taking a bath or shower. Showering has never been so much fun!
