The wood sculptures of sculptor Benoît Averly all have refined yet raw aesthetics. By playing and experimenting with light, lines and textures, he creates subtle contrasts and exceptional works of art every time.
Why the choice of wood?
‘I think it was one of the first materials I had my hands on when I was a kid. On the farm I always came into contact with wood. So I began to be interested in the botanical side of wood and of trees. In wood you find the life of the tree and that is very fascinating. I am lucky that there is a lot of wood available in my area, we have a lot of forests and tree species.’

How exactly do you go about your work?
‘I have ideas of shapes in my head, sometimes I sketch them, but usually not, and then I immediately start working with a piece of wood. It happens very instinctively. Although it takes more time, it often comes out all at once, especially when I'm working on new ideas. Then the work evolves from one sculpture to another and over the years it slowly changes. Creating is a true meditation. You are 100% absorbed in what you are doing when you create, and instead of consuming energy from you it actually energizes you. That's why I love the process so much. Real life and a deep and intense satisfaction.’
Finally, we asked Benoît Averly what he would still like to achieve in career, to which he replied, ‘I want to be able to live off my creations for as long as possible, because it's a fantastic way to live. Maybe I would like to work a little more practically and maybe make more large wall panels.’ Imagicasa is already looking forward to seeing more of his inspiring works.
