- Interior
The Greek studio L Architects recently completed a holiday home in Kefalonia, Villa Dione. The environment and its beautiful views played the main role in the design. We would like to show you around now.
The holiday home is part of a residential area on a hilltop with stunning views of the Ionian Sea. The design unites the terrain and its gentle gradations with the interior, giving guests unobstructed sea views from all rooms.
The house contains a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen, in a single, integrated space. L Architects chose an irregular cross as the layout, creating exterior corners that lead to the entrance. The perpendicular cross line follows the slope of the ground and houses the bed, on a raised platform. A sunken seating area at the front looks out over the pool and the sea, through a large opening. The horizontal line, which is parallel to the contour lines of the terrain, contains a bathroom with a recess on the floor for bathing. The kitchen is placed on the other side of it and enhances its perspective depth through an opening that looks out onto the sheltered outdoor dining area.
The only internal partition is transparent and has a triangular pattern of ceramic tiles. It discreetly separates the sleeping area from the bathroom, without interrupting the visual continuity of the space. The pool has the panoramic view of the sea as its backdrop. The edge of the pool is technically seamless, giving the impression that the water surface continues with the floor.
The subdued palette allows the furniture pieces to stand out with their sculptural shapes and dark tones.
In the interior, pressed cement slabs were placed on large horizontal and vertical surfaces. The colour of these slabs perfectly matches the off-white clay soil of the site. The subdued, monochrome palette allows carefully selected pieces of furniture to stand out with their sculptural shapes and dark tones. This creates an effect that intensifies the room.
The panorama of the sea takes centre stage and is accessed through strategically placed large openings. The same sense of freedom is expressed in the visual relationships established in the interior, through discreet but powerful gestures in spatial distribution.
