Porreres is a project of Munarq where the ruins of an existing house were transformed to a new whole that fits the feel of Mallorca perfectly. With an interesting construction and a loyal use of local sandstone, the spacious home immediately catches the eye. Therefore, we would like to ponder the studio’s methodology and how they achieved this attractive result.
Munarq is an architectural studio in Mallorca that was founded by Rafel and Pau Munar. The island and its landscape have no more secrets for the duo, and their projects make this more than clear. Namely, they mean to integrate architecture and the Mediterranean panorama into each other by approaching the tradition of the island with new ideas. Indispensable for this purpose is attention to sustainable constructions that alters the surroundings as little as possible by, more specifically, using as many natural materials as possible and carrying out beneficial alterations only. Moreover, the studio has a passion for straightforward designs, for these usually prove to be the most efficient and pragmatical. For this project, they went to the center-South area of Mallorca, where they handled traditional ruins.
The uncomplicated but attractive shapes make that the spaces have an inviting calmness.
The house that after a thorough transformation would receive the name Porreres, a reference to the synonymous municipality, is located on a sloping site that looks out on the town. An oak forest and a cultivated field are nearby as well. The ground on which the house was built is hard, rocky terrain. The team of Munarq decided to use marés sandstone in the façade; a unique material that comes from the local surroundings. The amazing swimming pool calls with its azure water and convinces you that a visit to the beach is not necessary to enjoy the summer temperatures. The uncomplicated but attractive shapes make that the spaces have an inviting calmness. They chose raw materials for the interior as well and let a neutral colour palette speak. Thanks to the entering sunlight and the white curtains, the whole simultaneously has an airy nature; perfect for accompanying the island life. This renovation project in Porreres, Mallorca is an excellent representation of how you want to live on a beautiful island like this. Munarq is clearly an expert in creating calm projects that reflect a lasting appeal and are ideal to show the best side of Mediterranean architecture.
