- Art & Design
Imagicasa introduced you in our previous summer edition (2019) to the unique and famous Roly Poly Chair by Faye Toogood. This year, the British designer created a collection of carpets based on her works of art in collaboration with CC-tapis.
CC-tapis is an Italian carpet company that was originally founded in France. Everything is designed in Milan and produced in Nepal where the carpets are hand-knotted by expert Tibetan craftsmen.
For their Doodle collection, they worked with Faye Toogood, who designed the carpets. They are made of cotton and Himalayan wool and represent the playfulness of the designer's sketches and works of art. As CC-tapis puts it: "Their overarching aesthetic is painterly, abstract and free-thinking as they respond to Toogood's preoccupation to intuitively explore new styles without boundaries through her work."
“Their overarching aesthetic is painterly, abstract and free-thinking as they respond to Toogood’s preoccupation to intuitively explore new styles without boundaries.”
The collection consists of six designs and the names of the carpets are as playful and cheerful as the designs themselves: 'Abstract Composition', 'Interior With Table', 'Reclining Figure', 'Seated Nude', 'The Mantle Piece' and 'Winter Still Life'. The designs are based on the sketchy tinker technique. Thanks to the use of cut and applied cords, a kind of collage-like montage is created that is reminiscent of drawings or doodles. The carpets often have a basis of colours such as pink, green, beige, grey and yellow, which is then complemented by black or dark lines. The resulting surfaces are also coloured in. The six designs are all different but have the same main – in this case black – thread in terms of colour and material palette and style. "Although the carpets are independently idiosyncratic, they connect through the overarching style of ready-made collage and handmade materiality," CC-tapis adds. You can even choose between different colours to personalise the carpet. It alternates between thick and thin threads, creating an interesting combination and alternation of textures. The rich – both in colour and material – Doodle carpets are a beautiful representation of Faye Toogood's playful and unique artworks and designs.
