In Svinninge, just outside Stockholm, Lowen Widman Architects designed a residence based on classic Swedish homes that was given a contemporary interpretation. With a solid foundation in local natural stone and a wooden frame and façade, nature is present in every nook and cranny here.
Lowen Widman Architects was founded by Daniel Widman and Ulrika Lowén Horn, who met while studying and soon realised they shared similar views on architecture. To continue ensuring the quality of all projects, the team grew in recent years, although each house still receives the architects' full attention. An important starting point in every design is the location, which is always reinterpreted to meet today's needs. Located along a slope, this home's plot had restrictive dimensions and relatively complex soil conditions. The architects looked for the best way to make use of that location and give the house a certain character. The house was designed based on direction and solar conditions and with due consideration for the mountain, stately pines and pristine forest slope. The foundation walls are cast and masonry and the gaps allow the forest to grow freely under and beside the house. The raised terrace achieves and enhances this attitude.
The house has a rectangular ground plan with a number of large windows, which provide plenty of natural light and beautiful views of the surrounding nature. Inside, a light wood species has been used for the floor, wall, and ceiling, creating a calm, uniform unity. Interestingly, the dining table is made in the same shade, so it almost disappears into the whole, so to speak. The bathroom, with its dark materials, is an exception to that calm colour palette, although even here a relaxing atmosphere remains the main goal. The interior was given further minimalist furnishings, where it is again wood, albeit now in a slightly darker shade, that is given a major role. Tactile materials contribute to the inviting atmosphere as well.
The location is reinterpreted to meet today's needs
Scandinavian minimalism gets a contemporary interpretation in this home by Lowen Widman Architects. Such minimalist results can only be achieved with a lot of knowledge and a clear design vision. The elegant interior design makes this residence a unique project with plenty of comfort.
