For CASACOR São Paolo 2022, Nildo José designed a space called Sertão for the Portinari brand. This resulted in an extraordinary and unique interior, in which design plays a prominent role. Take a look and get inspired.
Since 1986, CASACOR is the biggest South-American exposition about architecture. Because the exposition celebrates its thirty-fifth anniversary this year, it took place from July 5th until September 11th at the Conjunto Nacional, one of the most important architectural landmarks of São Paolo. With the theme of 'Infinite Particular', this year's event once again attracted many big names. One of those names is Nildo José, who believes that architecture should tell a story. His main inspirations for this Sertão Portinari were 'Cangaceiro', a work by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari, and the Sertão, a climatic area in the north-east of Brazil characterised by long periods of drought. "When we think of the Sertão, we usually focus on the drought, but in fact it's about the sky and the rain that will fall," explains José.
The Sertão is clearly present everywhere here.
When entering the room through the large metal portico, you immediately notice that earthy colours dominate the space. The rustic atmosphere naturally refers to the Sertão. The earthy palette is interrupted by blue, which stands for air and water and the promise of rain in the Sertão. Moreover, the perfect combination of organic shapes and clean lines creates a cosy interior that immediately invites you to discover more. A brick wall surrounds the entire space and is reminiscent of stamped earth, which is another reference to the Sertão. In the middle of the room, there is an island, which forms a seating area on one side and a bathroom on the other. The entire space also contains a living room, kitchen, dining room and master bedroom with a home office. The furniture was designed by both established and new names. One work of art in particular stands out: the colourful ‘Os Brasileiros’ by artist Juraci Dórea. Also worth mentioning: images of cracked earth are projected in the space and the sound of rainwater can be heard. The Sertão is clearly present everywhere here.
From an original point of view, José has created a unique space that, besides being an optimistic reference to the Sertão, is above all an oasis of peace. We are already looking forward to discovering more by this architect!
