Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren's first major retrospective is a must-see event. For those who would like to reminisce about the penetrating images of the renowned photographer, we would like to refer you to this equally impressive publication.
"In photography, it's not hearsay. A photographer has to be there, as a key witness on the scene of the crime yet to be committed. He's pre-sent, sent in advance. The photographer as a missionary, as a scout. Present in the present. On the spot in the present," says Stephan Vanfleteren about his work. Since October last year there has been an exhibition of his work in the FOMU Antwerp with the title 'PRESENT'. The fact that the exhibition has been extended until 19 April is a confirmation of what we already knew: Vanfleteren is a renowned photographer who leaves no one unmoved by his penetrating black-and-white portraits. A must for anyone who hasn't made it there yet but a second visit will undoubtedly also amaze you all over again. This large retrospective includes this beautiful book, in which the photographer shows how his career has evolved, what drives him and who he is as the person behind the artist, by means of text and – of course – image. The fist-thick book contains 505 photographs taken in Belgium and abroad over the past three decades. In addition to black-and-white portraits, we see a great deal of Vanfleteren's documentary, artistic and personal work.
