Since October there's been an exhibition at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium which reunites two icons of surrealism. Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, a Catalan and a Belgian who both left their mark on 20th century art. The exhibition has been extended until 16 February, so be sure to add a trip to Brussels to your calendar. Not able to go or want to bring the artworks into your home? Then make sure to buy the beautiful exhibition catalogue!
Dalí and Magritte first met in 1929 and got to know each other better during that year's so-called 'surrealist summer' in Cadaqués, where Dalí also invited the artists Éluard, Miró and Buñuel. Both the Spanish and the Belgian painters had developed a unique style that allowed greater freedom of imagination and experience. Art was their way of trying to grasp the changing world of the early 20th century and open a door to new possibilities for the future.
Immerse yourself completely into a surreal world.
The many similarities, but also the differences in subjects, style, personality etc, between Dalí and Magritte are an extremely interesting starting point to approach their work and life. They eventually went their own way, but in 2018 the spotlight was once again on the relationship and mutual influence between the artists through a collaboration between the Salvador Dalí Museum in Florida and the Magritte Museum in Brussels. The current exhibition at the KMSKB is the result of more extensive research and presents more than one hundred paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, films and other archive documents together.
Those who, like us, are fascinated by the personal, philosophical and aesthetic relationship between these two icons of the Avant Garde can visit the exhibition until 16 February. Additionally — or in case you couldn’t go — the catalogue is also highly recommended. Want to know even more about these artists? Then these publications are also a great addition to your art books collection:
