The name explains the philosophy behind this wonderful project by POLO Architects: The focus of the Barefoot Luxury residences is to enjoy life barefoot. Local craftsmanship, contemporary architecture, space and comfort were combined into a sustainable project.
Traditionel crafstmanship, contemporary architecture and sustainability go hand in hand
The Belgian POLO Architects was created by the architect duo Mauro Popocini and Patrick Lootens. The firm consists of more than 90 employees and the team realises both national and international projects ‘with a lot of knowledge, building skills and experience’. With a diversity of assignments, the designers always push their boundaries and show their skills and experience. One of their beautiful realisations, in collaboration with Going East and LIFE, is Barefoot Luxury, a residential project in Cabo Verde. The Barefoot Luxury villas serve as holiday residences and are located on the island of São Vicente. The arid landscape with hills and rocks and shades of brown, ochre and red served as inspiration for the design. Thanks to the palette of colours and materials, the villas blend into their surroundings and, just like the brown landscape, contrast nicely with the blue of the Atlantic Ocean. The beautiful views were used to the full and a lot of natural light was also provided. Each villa was given a contemporary look in combination with local craftsmanship.
Consisting of raw concrete and basalt blocks, the homes were built in the local, traditional way. The villas are connected to each other by roads that also consist of basalt stone. The interior was decorated by Going East. They provided a decoration in natural shades that soften the concrete. Most of the furniture was also made by local craftsmen.
Barefoot Luxury proves that even with a low-tech approach you can connect cultures and guarantee sustainability. The central theme here is simpler and more conscious living. With the beautiful design and the connection with nature and tradition, the focus was on space and comfort in the villas. We would love to walk barefoot through these beautiful residences.
