Holmen Abode in Copenhagen exemplifies the design firms’ philosophy. This transformation of a historic motor torpedo boat hall, built in the 1990s, combines timeless simplicity with modern elegance. By merging Japanese and Scandinavian design elements, the space invites tranquility while honoring its heritage.
Norm Architects, founded in Copenhagen in 2008, is a design practice rooted in enhancing the human experience. With expertise in architecture, interiors, and product design, they pursue a philosophy of well-being and aesthetic harmony. Their signature Soft Minimalism blends simplicity with depth, creating designs that resonate universally. We'd like to take you through one of their recent projects. Natural materials play a central role in the project. Warm oak wood grounds the design in sustainability and history, while the custom-designed kitchen blends oak and stone to create a centerpiece of both functionality and aesthetics. These tactile materials enhance the sensory experience, bridging tradition and modernity. The staircase, a refined feature, draws inspiration from the maritime setting. With a minimalist steel structure, it serves as both a sculptural and functional element, embodying the seamless union of form and function. This attention to detail highlights the holistic design approach that defines the project.
Soft textiles offer a tactile comfort that softens and enriches the room’s atmosphere
Beyond its structural features, Holmen Abode is designed to foster an intimate connection with its surroundings. Large windows frame vibrant outdoor views, creating a seamless dialogue between the interior and exterior. The minimalist interiors serve as a quiet backdrop, allowing the natural beauty of the landscape to take center stage. Carefully curated furniture and décor pieces further enhance this balance, blending utility with artistic expression. Subtle lighting elements play a crucial role in creating ambiance throughout the space. Hidden fixtures and soft, diffused light amplify the sense of calm while highlighting the natural textures of wood and stone. This thoughtful integration of lighting enhances the overall experience, ensuring the home feels warm and inviting at any time of day. The bathroom features a Shoji screen crafted from translucent washi paper, introducing a play of light and shadow that fosters a serene atmosphere. Soft textiles throughout the home enhance the sense of comfort and warmth, contributing to its tranquil ambiance.
As architect Peter Eland explains, ‘We’ve worked to embrace the purity of clean lines rooted in both Scandinavian and Japanese traditions alike. Natural materials and soft textiles imbue each space with timelessness and grounding.’
Holmen Abode illustrates how thoughtful design can elevate everyday life. By blending simplicity with depth and modernity with tradition, Norm Architects create spaces that invite connection, tranquility, and lasting beauty. Their commitment to Soft Minimalism ensures their projects remain meaningful and enduring.
