- Interior
The design of a shop, Maó Space, in an old neighborhood in Chinese Guangzhou makes us blink and pause for a moment. The interior has been designed in a surrealistic style with references to the past. The chaotic combination of furniture and space creates a narrative interior that intrigues.
Maó Space was designed by One Fine Day Studio (ofD), a German studio with several prestigious projects to their name. It was founded by Daniela Hake and Holger Hoffmann in Düsseldorf. The studio is characterised by a positive attitude and ambition that provides each project with unique design solutions. Their latest project in China is difficult to categorise. The design plays with the notion of time so it does not belong in the present or the future.
The chaotic combination of furniture and space creates a narrative interior that intrigues.
Dana Tomić Hughes, founder and editor of Designboom, describes the project as follows: ‘This retail interior is designed around the idea of collecting the fragments of the past and redefining that which has been forgotten.’ In order to illustrate the elusive nature of time, the designers use different design furniture pieces. For example, the 'Capitello' and 'Attica' sofa and the 'Attica TL' coffee table, parts of a living room set by Gufram. The furniture from the seventies depicts parts of an ionic column. These are combined with glossy screens, furniture from the 'Fold' series by Olivier Grégoire and industrial clothing racks. The structural columns have been adapted to radiate a Mediterranean feel and the spiral staircase gives the space a sculptural look. The designers have deliberately taken as many corners as possible out of the space so that it is experienced as a futuristic. ofD doesn't stick to the trends, they create a design that can't be placed anywhere. ‘Just like trends are set to be outdated as time goes by, all things would come and go as temporal fragments,’ the designers add. ‘Being in Maó Space, we have outstripped fads by making friends with time.’ Images courtesy of One Fine Day Studio & Partners
