Darker, colder days always make us dream about and long for a holiday and preferably to warmer places. Today we take you to the Calile hotel in Brisbane. Designed by Richards & Spence, this is a beautiful, minimalist stay with attractive architecture.
The Calile in the centre of James Street was established as Australia's 'first urban resort'. The design is based on Queensland's wonderful climate and tropical surroundings. This is how the local architectural firm Richards & Spence created a resort experience in the middle of an urban environment. "We don't think there is any other Australian hotel in a city designed as a resort. Most of the city hotels in our country are focused on the business market and conferences and do not focus on a swimming pool and surroundings," says Richards & Spence. The hotel determines and defines the look and feel of the entire James Street district. The architects were inspired for their design by other warm cities with many resorts such as Miami, Palm Springs and Mexico City. Adrian Spence, co-director of Richards & Spence, even referred to the final result last year as "the studio's greatest professional achievement to date".
"The design is based on the wonderful climate of Queensland and the tropical environment"
The centrally located swimming pool with sun lounges, dining areas and cabanas is probably the most indicative of a resort atmosphere. The 175 soothing guest rooms bring the climate inside with a soft palette of light pink, beige, white, gold and wood. "Our climate allows us to live outdoors for most of the year. The naturally ventilated rooms allow guests to share our unique outdoor lifestyle and reinforce again the sense of place unique to Brisbane," says Spence. Cork floors and sisal mats are combined with marble bathroom finishes, special living areas with day beds and dining tables, linen dressing gowns and a minibar filled with local delicacies. In addition to these delightful rooms, there are plenty of common areas and activities such as the award-winning restaurant, the spa, cocktail bar and even fashion boutiques. Here guests can really enjoy and experience all the comfort and convenience of a resort. And all this in the middle of a bustling city.
