Interior designer Laura Calleeuw is known for her subtle, sophisticated designs that seamlessly blend aesthetics and functionality. Her latest project in Knokke, a contemporary interpretation of a farmhouse, masterfully embodies this vision. With a perfect balance between softness and technical precision, she has created a unique living experience-a place where serenity, craftsmanship and nature merge.
The heart of this home is undoubtedly the pool area, which acts as a soothing endpoint within the architectural flow of the barn. No frantic walk-throughs or superfluous stimuli here, but a carefully orchestrated sense of security and relaxation. Acoustics were refined with a flocked ceiling, giving the space an intimate feel and eliminating distracting reflections of sound. This not only makes the space feel warmer and cosier, but also creates a deep calm-a place to really come to yourself.
What makes this project so special is the subtle transition between the different spaces. Materials flow into each other organically, creating a harmonious walking experience. No harsh contrasts, no excess of visual stimuli, just a thoughtful flow that takes the resident on a calm, intuitive journey through the house.
The perfect flow of space and material
For the floor, the team chose a natural stone finish, hand-laid and deliberately imperfect. This makes the transition from inside to outside feel effortless, as if the landscape of the farm gently flows in. Several resting points have been created around the pool, such as lounging and sitting areas, perfectly positioned to fully enjoy the surrounding greenery. This space not only functions as a place of relaxation, but is also connected to the outdoor terrace-an ideal setting for summer daytime parties.
For those who want to escape even more from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a discreet passageway leads to the basement, where an exclusive spa with sauna is located. On a gloomy Sunday or a relaxing evening with a loved one, this place becomes a haven, where time and stress fade away for a while.
With this project, Laura Calleeuw has once again proved that she knows how to masterfully shape a space not only visually, but also emotionally. This farmhouse is not a house, but an experience-a cocoon of tranquillity where luxury and simplicity go hand in hand. Photography by Bert Demasure
