The Sensu collection Eva Szumilas for STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN stems from the rich tapestry of Japanese traditions, weaving a story that spans centuries of cultural heritage and artistic expression. Inspired by the graceful elegance of folding fans, revered symbols of respect and communication, and is a tribute to a tradition steeped in beauty and sophistication.
From the Heian Period to the present day, Japanese fans have served as more than tools for airflow; they embody the essence of elegance, grace and tradition. Made of bamboo and silk, each fan tells a story of nobility and refinement, symbolising good wishes and sincere communication. Based on this, architect and designer Eva Szumilas designed a beautiful collection exclusively for STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN. Building on this legendary legacy, the Sensu Collection seamlessly combines Japanese tradition with modern European sensibility. With a nod to the warmth and earthiness of Japanese construction, the collection embraces wood as the main material and celebrates its natural beauty and versatility. Complemented by the timeless elegance of travertine stone, each piece exudes a sense of understated luxury and sophistication.
As a designer specialising in custom-made limited-edition collectibles, meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail are the hallmarks of my work. The Sensu bookcase, a focal point of the collection, exemplifies this dedication to excellence. Made of travertine stone slabs and solid wood elements, adorned with cast oxidised brass handles, it stands as a testament to both form and function. Although originally designed as a bookcase, the Sensu Collection transcends traditional boundaries and invites endless possibilities for creative expression. With its star pattern reminiscent of unfolding fans, it captures the imagination and reveals hidden depths and unexpected surprises.
