Upon entering the renovated canal house in Haarlem, the serene ambiance created by Studio Piet Boon is immediately apparent. This monumental property, with a history dating back to 1620, has undergone a thorough metamorphosis, harmoniously integrating modern elements with the building's classic charm. The client's wish was for a bright, peaceful home with a calm atmosphere, in which every detail contributes to a characteristic and harmonious look.
Studio Piet Boon realised this vision by presenting a design in which a central, plaster-wrapped staircase acts as a unifying element. This staircase winds through the house, bringing a sense of continuity and balance. Each floor breathes the same design language, contributing to a cohesive whole. Smart spatial adaptations make even the smaller rooms feel more spacious without compromising aesthetics or functionality. A particularly playful yet elegant solution can be found in the dining area. Here, sofas have been placed with loose, weighted cushions that can be turned in any direction. This allows residents to sit comfortably and enjoy the enchanting view of Haarlem's canals. This detail highlights Studio Piet Boon's characteristic attention to both comfort and aesthetics. The use of materials and colours is subtle and sophisticated. The colour 'NORTH' sets the tone for a soothing palette that allows for various textures and high-quality materials such as suede, natural stone, and wood veneer. The fireplace, clad in natural stone, and the rug from the Piet Boon by cc-tapis collection, a combination of wool and tencel, add to the luxurious feel of the interior. In the bathroom, sophistication is reflected by the use of different types of Salvatori natural stone, creating an elegant and serene atmosphere.
The original kitchen design was combined with modern, flexible seating solutions
One of the biggest challenges in this project was to respect the imposing status of the property, especially the historic vaults dating back to the 14th century. The designers managed to overcome this question by carefully dealing with the existing layout while making modern modifications that improve the functionality and comfort of the house. Retaining the original kitchen design, combined with modern, flexible seating solutions in the dining area, is an example of this careful approach. The result is an interior that strikes the perfect balance between classic elegance and modern luxury. Every detail, from the plaster-wrapped staircase to the flexible cushions, contributes to the harmonious and serene atmosphere the client desired. This project in Haarlem is a brilliant example of how Studio Piet Boon manages to combine timeless design and contemporary comfort. Founded in 1983, the company has earned a worldwide reputation for their perfectly balanced designs. Based in Oostzaan, Netherlands, the studio draws inspiration from the rich history of the Zaan region, an area known for its innovative spirit and 'get the job done' mentality. This heritage is evident in every project the studio undertakes, where functionality, aesthetics and individuality come together in a harmonious and timeless design.
Studio Piet Boon reaffirms their status as a leading studio in the world of exterior, interior and product design. Their ability to combine classic elegance and modern luxury, without losing the original charm of a property, makes each project unique and timeless.
