On the West Coast of California there is an impressive outpost, the Santa Monica Proper. The newest boutique hotel of Proper Hotels by the founders of the Viceroy Hotel Group. The inside, however, is even more impressive. Kelly Wearstler is the cool-girl designer behind the casual, yet luxurious interior.
A loose form of luxury is what the Santa Monica Proper Hotel stands for. Wearstler was inspired by the classical history of Santa Monica to shape the interior of the hotel to surround holiday visitors with the local culture. In the lobby you'll find several striking objects that are the result of collaborations with L.A. craftsmen such as Ben Medansky, Morgan Peck and Tanya Aguiniga. All masters in original works of art and monolithic installations.
"An impressive outpost on California's West Coast"
Vintage pieces of furniture in combination with modern objects form a successful aesthetics and bring the unexpected in the hotel. Wearstler's distinctive flair for eclectic materials and textures occupies a subdued place within the neutral palette. The tile-clad structural columns, the abstract and irregular parquetry and transitional full-height archways of timber form a constant in the light airy whole.
A versatile blend of organic tones and textures brings the iconic lifestyle of Santa Monica on the coast into the private spaces. The property has two separate wings, with the 271 attractive rooms distributed over them. One has been given a contemporary look the other has been given a retro look. Wearstler plays out the retro aspect with floral wallpaper, deco lamps and peach skirting. The contemporary wing has exposed concrete walls, easel-mounted flatscreens and sculptural mid-century furniture.

Just steps from the Santa Monica Proper boutique hotel are luxury boutiques, wellness areas, farmer markets, and the sprawling Californian beach makes the hotel a holistic extension of the local lifestyle. Soon Proper’s signature restaurant Onda will also open. It will be the long-awaited collaboration between the famous chefs Jessica Koslow and Gabriela Camara. We would love having a wonderful holiday in this summer destination!
