- Interior
Inspired by Japan in terms of construction, but enriched with a Mediterranean feel identity. This Barcelona apartment brings together two worlds that prove how well they can match. Capitan Arenas consists of spaces arranged with considerable flexibility. Although limited in area, the residence lends itself as a perfect home base for those who appreciate simplicity and minimalism.
As an interior designer, you should be able to fall in love with an empty space, according to Miriam Barrio. Her eponymous studio approaches each project with an eye for personality and an urge to show something unique to the outside world. Business, residential and commercial: different types of commissions have already passed through their hands. This time, they designed an apartment where the philosophy of Japanese homes was at the basis. Nothing is superfluous. A clearly measured floor plan proclaims from the first steps inside that the entire concept was developed to be as functional and versatile as possible. Sliding folding doors separate the private rooms from the communal areas, and behind a shelf an observant eye will find a secret corridor leading to the bathrooms and the dressing room. The spaces are constructed with many straight, clear lines that often present symmetrical tendencies. Therefore, there is no visual chaos, but the interior exudes a calming cohesion. We also have the consistent choice of materials to thank for that. For instance, the floor continues from inside to outside, reinforcing the connection between interior and exterior. That connection with nature was high on the agenda, which also translates into the extensive window on the main façade.
You should be able to fill the same space in multiple ways
You should be able to fill the same space in multiple ways. With this in mind, a folding dining table and sofa were chosen. After all, such multifunctionality allows you to use as much potential as possible even in a smaller home. Furthermore, it is striking that the entire design relies on cream and beige colours. The obvious presence of wood plays an important role in this, as does raffia for the panels and doors. Following the Japanese approach, the designers explored a Mediterranean direction, which is evident in the palette. All the furniture was custom-made from oak. Not only were such materials preferred for the warm and comfortable character they spread, but also for their natural splendour. During the day, the rooms are flooded with as much natural daylight as possible, while during the late hours, soft lamps evoke a relaxing atmosphere. With the security of a safe nest, residents come home every day without a care in the world. Your gaze glides over the interior like a knife through butter, and that mainly thanks to the continuous line in materials and colours. The result of all the hard work is an imperturbable haven where peace prevails every day.
Capitan Arenas is a convincing feat of interior design by Miriam Barrio. Full of harmony and balance, the concept aims to unite the punctuality of a Japanese home with a Mediterranean palette. The team succeeded in this with flying colours!
