Transparency is the main theme in this special 'Transparency Matters' collection of art, furniture and lighting designed by creative studio Draga & Aurel. The duo Draga Obradovic and Aurel Basedow presented this beautiful series at Milan Design Week 2019 and now we would like to show you their special designs.
The collection consists of furniture and lighting for both indoor and outdoor use. The designers were inspired by bold and idiosyncratic sources such as Space Age design and Optic Art and this in combination with minimalist, simple volumes. Hence the futuristic and retro look. The main material used for this range is tinted resin. It is a very versatile material, both in terms of colour and transparency. You can immediately see that the designers have played and experimented with the different levels of translucency.
This transparency in the collection has a double meaning for the designers. First of all, it stands for the transparent characteristics of the materials used. But it also stands for a certain attitude, as Obradovic says: "From 'Transparency' we think of transformation, transition, transgression, transnationality,... all the words that describe us and our collaboration of more than ten years.”
The lamps in the series are made of mineral tones and cast glass. They look almost like colourful piano keys against the wall. Different shades of glass were fused together in order to achieve a precise colouring. The amber tones are reminiscent of sea glass, while the pink and purple versions look like jewels.
The cast bronze tables are inspired by clusters of wild flowers. They consist of a round resin top that is connected to the other circles by bronze 'legs' at staggered heights.
"This collection symbolises our evolution as designers and artists. We approached the project holistically, mastering new processes, working with new materials and creating each piece by hand in our atelier. Designing this solo collection was an opportunity for us to express our joy and think outside the box," says Obradovic.
A furniture, lighting and object collection where transparency is key.
