With The Reserve at Chester Zoo, the United Kingdom is gaining a unique destination for those seeking to experience nature and sophistication in a single stay. This new hospitality concept, set to open its doors in the summer of 2025, comprises 51 safari-style lodges, a central reception area and a waterside terrace. The complex overlooks a landscape where giraffes and other animals roam freely, just a short distance from guests. The project positions itself as an innovative approach to luxury accommodation within a context closely linked to nature conservation.
Behind the design is Jolie, an international design studio with offices in London, Manchester and New York. Led by founder Franky Rousell and creative director Sarah Wakefield, the studio focuses on sensory experiences and people-centred spaces. This vision forms the starting point for their collaboration with Chester Zoo, where they developed the interior concept for The Reserve with a focus on experience, materiality and context.
Elke overnachting draagt bij aan de conservatieprojecten van Chester Zoo, waardoor het verblijf ook een directe impact heeft op natuurbehoud wereldwijd.
The design draws inspiration from the vast African savannah, without resorting to obvious references. Warm earth tones, natural materials and tactile textures lend the interior a calm and balanced atmosphere. Wooden floors, subtly dimmed lighting and open sightlines create a setting that invites visitors to slow down and observe attentively. Generously proportioned windows and spacious terraces reinforce the connection with the outdoors, allowing the landscape to become a natural part of the guest experience.
In addition to the lodges, Jolie also designed communal spaces such as the Welcome Lodge, which houses the Tsavo lounge and the Amboseli restaurant. Here, wood and marble are combined with biophilic design principles, resulting in a warm and inviting setting. The lakeside terrace serves as a place of tranquillity with views of the water and wildlife.
The Reserve goes beyond aesthetics and comfort. Every overnight stay contributes to Chester Zoo’s conservation projects, meaning the stay also has a direct impact on nature conservation worldwide. Guests gain access to exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences and can explore the park outside regular opening hours. In this way, every overnight stay becomes a meaningful experience that inspires, brings peace of mind and leaves a lasting impression of the power of nature. Text by Melissa Helsen
