Set on 30 hectares of enchanting historic land in Arrowtown, near Queenstown in New Zealand, the Ayrburn hospitality hub stands as a living work of art, with the Woolshed eatery as its central focal point. Much more than just a hospitality venue, the venue is a profound reinterpretation of the region’s rich stories and heritage. Masters of weaving history with modernity, Sydney-based designers Alexander & Co. delved into the site’s ancient artefacts and literature to create an inspiring and meaningful environment that both pays homage to the past and looks towards a sustainable future.
Woolshed is Ayrburn’s first eatery and embodies Alexander & Co.’s vision: a place that reflects the layered stories of people, place and time. Built using local materials such as slate and the original floorboards of the old woolshed, which have been renovated and refitted, the space retains a venerable historical depth. Central to the Woolshed is a steel-clad fireplace that exudes warmth and cosiness, anchoring the space structurally and visually. The interior is finished with raw oak ceiling cladding, reclaimed corrugated steel and a variety of harvested and reclaimed timber details. These materials connect the present with the past and embody Alexander & Co.’s circular design methodology. Woolshed is designed as a welcoming chalet-style bistro that invites visitors to enjoy culinary delights throughout the day, from breakfast to dinner. The views of the reconstructed river and surrounding area are breathtaking and are enhanced by the outdoor fireplaces and carefully placed terraces, complete with stylish outdoor furniture. The interior is warm and luxurious, with moss green velvet and burgundy leather, which contrasts with the natural materials and surrounding nature. It gives a sense of security and creates the perfect ambiance for art and distinctive furniture to fill the space. This contemporary bistro reflects the craftsmanship and creative passion that Alexander & Co. puts into every project.

Alexander & Co. has created a space where visitors can enjoy great food and a serene environment, while feeling part of a bigger story. The historical and cultural richness of Arrowtown comes to life in a tangible way at Woolshed, and Alexander & Co.’s vision for sustainable architecture is evident in every detail. It’s a celebration of heritage and sustainability, with an unmistakable sense of timelessness that invites visitors to pause and enjoy the beautiful, carefully curated surroundings."
