What was once the Hangzhou Textile Factory – a landmark of the city’s light-industry era – now forms the fertile ground for a new chapter. As the textile machines fell silent and the factory relocated, its original industrial mission came to an end, yet this very transition opened the door to imagination. Today, Jingwei Tiandi Creative Park does more than preserve history: it embodies new cultural possibilities. With this in mind, MARCH SPACE STUDIO created the Wang Danhua Clothing Collection Store, a space where historical depth intertwines with the gentle rhythms of everyday life.
The design begins with respect. Following a strategy of “respecting relics and local regeneration”, the studio ensured the spirit of the factory remained alive. The façade, clad in rust-coloured metal panels, mirrors the marks left by passing time a contemporary interpretation of the site’s rugged industrial fabric. Even the wooden fence carries its own past: crafted from former railway sleepers, their textured surfaces and time-worn warmth allow visitors to literally touch history.
Inside, the raw concrete columns stand as quiet witnesses to the factory’s past. In contrast lie carefully laid artistic bricks and timber veneers, forming a subtle dialogue between hardness and softness, between past and present. This interplay creates a sense of temporal layering — a gentle slowing of pace in which history can breathe anew.
“The space does not seek instant visual impact, but longevity”
Yet the aim was never to create just another shop. The intention was to shape a living, perceptible world. As founder Wang Danhua describes, “long-termism” is not only the brand’s philosophy but also the guiding thread of every spatial decision. The result is an immersive environment rooted in warmth, craft and calm. Local artisans wove fabrics from cotton and silk in patient, rhythmic motions, while metal elements were hand-forged and shaped into functional sculptures that soften the space’s industrial edges.
Soft sofas, warm timber tones and a gentle play of light create an atmosphere that invites visitors to slow down. Here, clothing becomes more than an isolated product it becomes part of a home-like experience. Guests rediscover their relationship with textiles through touch, attention and connection. Selection becomes experience, and experience becomes a quiet personal ritual. In balancing the rugged and the delicate, the historical and the contemporary, the space avoids loud statements and opts instead for longevity. The Wang Danhua Collection Store is more than a place of retail: it is a living archive of memory, regeneration and sustainable lifestyle.
