Casa Elisa, a house from the 1960s, underwent a remarkable transformation in São Paulo. What was once a classic yet outdated family home has been turned into a modern, refined residence for a family with four children. This project, executed by the renowned architectural firm Felipe Hess Arquitetos, demonstrates how a house can preserve its history while simultaneously adopting a new, contemporary identity. The result is a beautiful example of how old and new elements can harmoniously come together in a living space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The home has an introspective character, with the house oriented entirely toward a lush tropical garden that embraces an organically shaped swimming pool. This idea of privacy and connection with nature is reinforced by the layout of the house, which is divided into two volumes. The two white concrete slabs form the main building and mark the floors of the house. These slabs not only act as protective facades for the windows but also create a balcony for the couple’s suite on the upper floor.
The choice of materials for both the interior and exterior creates a refined aesthetic and a pleasant contrast. The exterior walls of the home are clad in beige, mineral-painted brick, which provides a subtle earth-tone that blends harmoniously with the tropical surroundings. The dark wooden shutters add an extra layer of contrast and warmth to the facades. Inside, the design is minimalist and organic, with light stone flooring on the ground floor and natural wood finishes for the cabinetry and other furnishings.
A harmonious blend of history and modernity creates a space that feels both timeless and contemporary
At the back of the house, a new pavilion has been added. This light structure houses the family’s recreation and relaxation space, including a sauna, a barbecue, and a room with a climbing wall. The pavilion reflects the modern approach to design, emphasizing the combination of functionality with aesthetically responsible choices that further enhance the home’s atmosphere. Felipe Hess Arquitetos has further realized its philosophy of detailed, custom-designed architecture with this project. The firm works with a holistic approach, where every aspect of the design, from furniture to the entire building, is thoroughly explored. This multidimensional approach is characterized by the use of new materials and techniques, making each project not only technically advanced but also having a unique identity. The work of the architect and his team highlights how collaboration and the continuous search for innovative solutions are key to successful architectural projects. Each project reflects the specific wishes of the client and the firm’s ability to realize these visions in a sophisticated and unique way.
