- Interior
City and nature are not concepts one would immediately link together: while the word "city" evokes buildings, highways, industries, and shopping streets, "nature" is associated with trees, rivers, greenery, and silence. However, Norm Architects have brilliantly succeeded in transforming this apparent juxtaposition into a dynamic dialogue known as Kent Avenue. This penthouse, located on the Brooklyn Waterfront with views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline, combines New York’s industrial charm with serene, natural aesthetics. Designed by Norm Architects, the residence offers a unique balance between urban dynamism and tranquil sophistication. Large windows and a smart layout ensure a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, with a focus on natural elements.
The penthouse, spanning 350 square meters, occupies the entire top floor of a building and is divided into two separate living areas: a private section for the family and a fully equipped guest unit. This layout promotes both privacy and social interaction. The interior features an open plan that carefully creates zones without sacrificing spaciousness. Hidden within the walls are various storage spaces—such as the TV lounge concealed behind hidden doors—emphasizing the streamlined design. Both the family and guest accommodations are designed with the same refined aesthetic, prioritizing simplicity and functionality. The communal spaces, such as the living room and kitchen, exude tranquillity and invite relaxation, while large terraces with greenery extend the interior spaces. In this way, Kent Avenue maintains a dynamic dialogue between city and nature.
the Kent Avenue penthouse creates an oasis of calm amidst the chaos of bustling New York City
The natural theme runs as a common thread throughout the design. Warm wooden elements, such as the bed frame and kitchen finishes, draw inspiration from the surrounding nature. In harmony with cooler materials like grey stone in the bathroom, a modern and minimalist contrast is created. Plush textiles and soft, neutral tones enhance the sense of comfort and connection with nature. The colour palette—earth tones, light wood, and subtle accents of black steel—emphasizes a timeless, organic atmosphere. Moreover, the large windows allow abundant natural light to flood in, strengthening the interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces. The Kent Avenue penthouse is thus founded on two pillars: nature and modernity. By uniting these two elements, it challenges the stereotype that nature and modernity cannot coexist. By integrating natural materials and organic shapes into an urban setting, the design not only offers a visually appealing space but also fosters a sense of well-being. The penthouse is a successful example of how architecture can blur the boundaries between the outdoors and indoors, creating an oasis of calm in the midst of bustling New York City.
