In picturesque Hyères-les-Palmiers, a town known for its rich history, art and natural beauty, the former 1890 Hôtel du Parc has undergone a remarkable transformation. Now reborn as Hotel Lilou, this beautiful establishment brings back to life the glory of the city's great hotel tradition. Under the visionary direction of David Pirone and the refined design of studio Haddou Dufourcq, Hotel Lilou is a contemporary ode to elegance, hospitality and the celebration of life.
Surrounded by the enchanting turquoise Mediterranean Sea, Hyères has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century. At that time, the town became a favourite destination for Europe's elite, including illustrious writers and artists such as Alphonse de Lamartine, Man Ray, André Gide and Jean Cocteau. Hyères was a haven for winter travellers, especially British, seeking a mild climate and exotic vegetation. The town flourished with the construction of villas, guesthouses, luxury hotels and palaces to meet the growing demand.
In 1890, the Hôtel des Etrangers, later renamed Hôtel du Parc, was built and welcomed travellers from all over the world in Haussmann style. After being owned by local families for generations, the hotel came into the hands of David Pirone in 2020. With a three-year restoration programme, he restored the hotel to its former glory, while adding a contemporary twist. Hotel Lilou is now a place where human connections are nurtured and guests are treated as personal friends.
Born in nearby Toulon, David Pirone embarked on a Grand Tour at a young age, which gave him a wealth of experience. Returning to his beloved Hyères, he opened his first business, Restaurant Le Marais, in 2013, followed by his first hotel, La Reine Jane. In 2023, he added Popolo, a delicatessen with Italian flavours. With the purchase and renovation of Hôtel du Parc, now Hotel Lilou, Pirone has taken his passion for hospitality and design to new heights.
Architect duo Kim Haddou and Florent Dufourcq have created a contemporary and harmonious space at Hotel Lilou while respecting its heritage. The lounge and bar are inspired by the winter gardens of the great 19th-century hotels, with graphic lines, geometric figures and an interplay of transparency. Rattan sofas, a vintage fireplace and a palatial bar with poplar wood create an atmosphere of elegance and conviviality.
Hotel Lilou is a vibrant celebration of Hyères' rich heritage, art and natural beauty
The 37 rooms, spread over four floors, are designed to capture the sublime light of Hyères. High ceilings, oversized mouldings, cork parquet floors and a mix of earth tones create a comfortable and stylish ambience. Bathrooms are tiled with geometric patterns and equipped with Diptyque products, providing a luxurious and refined experience.
Hotel Lilou's terrace and swimming pool are inspired by Hyères' grand 19th-century mansions. A lush garden, designed by landscape architect Damien Roger, offers a green oasis with a historic yucca and 200 plant species. The swimming pool, decorated with frescoes by artist Jacques Merle, reflects the sun and offers a serene place to relax.
The hotel's library, hidden under vaulted beams, is an inspiring space full of books on travel, architecture and southern French cuisine. Here, guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, events and lectures. In addition, Hotel Lilou introduces the concept of ‘Guest Chefs’, where every year a new chef is invited to share his culinary world. Emmanuel Perrodin, a nomadic chef, inaugurates this series with his creative dishes.
The restaurant's menu pays homage to Provençal classics and Mediterranean influences, with dishes such as panisses, bouillabaisse croquettes and stuffed squid. Chef Perrodin uses local and seasonal ingredients, ensuring an authentic and flavourful culinary experience. The bar offers an extensive selection of more than 200 wines from across the Mediterranean, as well as innovative cocktails celebrating the best of the region.
Jean-Pierre Blanc, director of Villa Noailles, has invited 14 artists to create unique works on the theme of holidays and travel. From murals to ceramics, these artworks enrich the hotel's aesthetic and offer guests a visual feast. The hotel's corridors echo the poetic words of writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who expressed his love for Hyères.
Hotel Lilou is more than a luxury hotel; it is a vibrant celebration of Hyères' rich heritage, art and natural beauty. With its elegant design, warm hospitality and attention to detail, Hotel Lilou invites guests to relax, enjoy and experience the magic of this enchanting city.
