In the breathtaking landscape of Laguna Beach, California, filmmaker Gregory Caruso's weekend home reveals a sophisticated history. With one foot firmly in the past, this charming cottage serves as an intimate creative environment and a tribute to the visionaries who have inhabited it since 1917.
A true treasure chest resides within the protective walls of this unique retreat with surprising remnants of the past. The unique discovery during the recent renovation brought not only a fantastic feeling, but also a deeper inspiration for designers Scott Jarrell and Kristan Cunningham, the brilliant duo behind Hammer and Spear. Caruso's artistic vision was skillfully translated into a tribute to the spirit of Big Sur's Esalen Institute, with its timeless flair. Although the design was tempered, the house featured saturated colours with vibrant contrast. The aim: to renew the soul and structure of the house and firmly anchor it in the rich artistic culture of the inspiring region. To preserve the original features, the renovation was played with subtly. Swing doors are transformed into elegant pocket doors and 105-year-old redwood walls, which were carefully restored, now shine in the home. New elements were added sparingly, with copper accents giving the kitchen and bathroom a whole new lease of life. The home translates like antiquity in an impressively modern way, by keeping the wood tones and chunky elements and using modern design pieces. The furniture is seamlessly incorporated into an ancient story and only makes the story stronger.

Despite the beautiful result, Laguna Beach brought challenges, but with thoughtful design choices, such as paper shoji shutters. Obstacles were removed without compromising true aesthetics. The retreat offers Caruso not only an escape from busy city life, but also the opportunity to host guests in a carefully curated home. From the luxurious towels in the linen closet to the carefully chosen kitchen gadgets, every detail has been thoughtfully arranged for an immediate and warm homely experience. With a story of its own, Laguna Beach embraces history and modernity together. Each nook whispers inspiration and timeless tranquillity. In this little gem, there is no room for stuffy novelty - only pure serenity and timeless inspiration await discovery here. Courtesy of Yoshihiro Makino and Hammer and Spear
