In 2024, Kyiv welcomed Meva Spot, a fast-food establishment that redefines the typical dining experience. Designed collaboratively by Yulia Larina of Make It Design Bureau and Anna Kolesnik, this 65-square-meter gem brings the tranquility of the seaside to an urban setting. Located in a residential area, the project is a refreshing escape for locals and visitors alike, combining modern aesthetics with natural elements that evoke the beauty of the shore.
The name Meva, translating to seagull in Ukrainian, reflects the establishment’s coastal inspiration. The design captures the essence of sand, stone, sea, and waves, creating an immersive atmosphere far removed from conventional fast-food spaces. The goal was clear: to deliver an unforgettable experience that resonates with the senses, aligning with the unique and contemporary menu. The design palette is centered around beige tones, reminiscent of sandy beaches, and shades of sea waves. This natural foundation is enriched by textures and materials that emulate the seaside, from the cool smoothness of polished stones to the airy lightness of linen textiles. The designers carefully selected elements that mirror the seaside's dynamic yet tranquil beauty. First sand and stone: Furniture and decor with organic shapes mimic water-smoothed stones. A podium, shaped like sand cliffs, functions as seating, eating areas, and waiting zones, optimizing the compact space for both individuals and groups.
Next, waves and sea: The curved lines of the furniture and structural details replicate the fluidity of waves. Glassblocks at the bar shimmer like water in sunlight, while the metallic ceiling reflects light, evoking rippling sunlight on the sea’s surface. And last natural materials: Wooden details symbolize resilience, and linen rugs suggest seaweed scattered along the shore. Microcement creates a seamless, smooth floor that feels as if visitors are walking on sand.
Meva Spot is where the serenity of the seaside meets the pulse of the city
The project isn't just a feast for the eyes; it engages all the senses. The seating areas, such as the sand bench crafted from large and small stones, offer tactile connections to nature. The color scheme and greenery further enhance the feeling of being on a secluded beach. Subtle lighting scenarios create an intimate atmosphere, with concealed fixtures providing both functional and scenographic illumination.
Local artisans played a key role in bringing Meva Spot’s vision to life. Metal shelves and cabinets were crafted based on the designers’ sketches, preserving the natural texture of polished metal. This approach aligns with the establishment’s celebration of imperfectly smooth, organic surfaces, tying back to the natural world it seeks to emulate. At Meva Spot, the experience of dining transcends the ordinary. Orders are quickly and conveniently picked up at a bar or window, while the interior’s thoughtful design ensures a sense of calm and comfort. Every element, from the podium seating to the shimmering bar decor, reflects a harmonious blend of functionality and beauty. In bringing the seaside to Kyiv, the project captures the spirit of the coast, offering visitors a moment of escape and a taste of serenity in the bustling city. It stands as a testament to how thoughtful design can transform even the most ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences.
