A moving work of art is an apt description of L’Observatoire, the latest sleeper carriage set to join the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in March 2025. This extraordinary suite is the creation of celebrated artist JR, who, with this project, positions himself as a true pioneer in the storied history of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express—a train that has connected Europe’s most mesmerising cities for over a century. L’Observatoire is a tribute to this rich legacy: JR has meticulously designed the carriage, drawing inspiration from astronomical observatories. He has infused the essence of his Parisian art studio into the wagon, adding personal art objects and souvenirs to create an intimate and warm atmosphere as passengers speed through spectacular landscapes. Heading to Budapest, Florence, or Paris? Or perhaps Vienna? This extraordinary train takes you on a journey through history, nature, and grand cities, immersing you in an alternative world that never stands still.
L’Observatoire is far more than just a carriage—it is a carefully crafted space that unites art, innovation, and craftsmanship. This sleeper carriage is a masterpiece in its own right, blending classic elements with modern influences. For example, JR collaborated with Atelier Philippe Allemand to incorporate intricate marquetry, featuring fine patterns and motifs inspired by his fascination with urban landscapes. Every detail, from the lighting to the layout, has been designed to spark curiosity and fully immerse guests in a sensory experience. The carriage features several distinct spaces, each with its own unique character. The bedroom is a haven of tranquility, with green-toned wall coverings and a freestanding bathtub surrounded by Art Nouveau-inspired stained glass. With L’Observatoire, JR dared to dream, as he himself expressed: "I could never have imagined this collaboration because the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is such a historic train." Yet, he refused to be limited by such imagined boundaries, which is evident in his design. For instance, he incorporated an oculus, allowing guests to gaze at the infinite sky from their bed and dream of what lies ahead, unrestricted by a finite ceiling.
Step aboard L’Observatoire, where art, innovation, and luxury converge in a boundless journey of discovery
The lounge offers a flexible layout with comfortable sofas that can transform into an intimate dining area for private meals. The library, filled with a curated selection of books and vinyl records, provides a space for literary and musical enjoyment. Hidden behind this library, accessible only through a secret door, is the sleeper carriage’s tea room. Here, a fireplace warmly invites passengers to pause and reflect. JR describes L’Observatoire as his personal “studio on wheels,” filling it with secrets and hidden features, from concealed compartments to cryptic messages waiting to be discovered by curious travelers. These playful touches defy conventional interior design and encourage guests to reconnect with their sense of wonder and curiosity. L’Observatoire offers more than just comfort—it is a journey through art, history, and innovation. By blending past and present in such a unique way, JR ensures that every trip aboard this one-of-a-kind carriage becomes a lasting memory. Step aboard and be enchanted by a world where art and travel endlessly converge and where even the sky is no limit.
