Aurora Design carried out a renovation project for Chun Sheng Jewelry, located in downtown Kunming, an old district in China. This three-storey building, covering an area of 300 square metres, is a challenging assignment due to the interaction between the old and new. The complexity of the surroundings urged a design that captures the charm of spring. Chun Sheng Jewelry represents a new generation of art jewellers. Founded by a young entrepreneur born in 1995, the brand focuses on high-quality original gemstone designs that accentuate the natural beauty of the stones. The brand has its own production facility where each piece is handcrafted by experienced artisans. This process highlights the combination of unique creativity and outstanding craftsmanship.
Spring has been chosen as the theme in the interior design to reflect the essence of the brand. The design creates an atmosphere that evokes the fresh, vibrant energy of spring. The existing building frame has been retained, but inside, a new, airy and open space has been provided by removing load-bearing walls and integrating modular sections. A large terrace and outdoor space has been added on the south side to let in more natural light, creating a connection with nature. Light plays a crucial role in the design, with sunlight filtering through glass doors and warming the interior space with spring light. The light climbs along stone ledges and makes spring tangible through the delicate branches that sprout and bloom, as it were. This, combined with the smell of tea, adds an extra dimension to the experience of spring in the interior.
An innovative design that embraces spring
A striking art installation welcomes visitors at the entrance, which immediately conveys the relaxing and comfortable atmosphere of the space. Inspired by nature and plant root systems, this installation embraces the space and creates a sense of tranquillity. The wooden furniture, designed by Aurora Design, adds functionality to the aesthetic appeal and makes the space inviting and relaxing. The designers creatively envisioned the space based on workflow and colour patterns, with the ‘jewellery room’ on the north side providing a special place for clients to realise their own ideas. This room serves as an incubator for creativity and provides a place where ideas can grow and flourish. The space is designed to give a feeling of a spring festival, with a lit and sparkling environment that highlights Chun Sheng Jewelry's unique brand identity. The workspace is enriched with greenery by keeping the plants from the original location and moving some to the terrace, creating a natural moment and adding a calming atmosphere. The grey space and wooden installation serve as a connection between inside and outside, capturing spring in images. The staircase connecting the second and third floors, with its subdued colours and geometric shapes, enhances the balance and flows through to the third floor, which serves as office and VIP space. Rectangular windows and a skylight allow plenty of natural light, with each type of light contributing to the visual experience of the jewellery and ensuring the privacy of the studio. Interior colours were carefully chosen to reflect the characteristics of the neighbourhood, with a white facade emphasising harmony with the surroundings. Inside, warm and neutral colours have been added to create an atmosphere of balance, warmth and calm, reflecting spring at different stages of the season. With this project, Aurora Design has presented an innovative design that embraces spring and perfectly expresses the essence of Chun Sheng Jewelry. Through a sophisticated integration of light and space and the use of natural elements, an environment has been established that underlines the brand's artistic and aesthetic values and captures the unique beauty of spring.
