PPAA, the renowned Mexican architecture firm operated by Pablo Pérez Palacios, is known for its innovative and sustainable designs. One of their most inspiring projects is Copas, a unique residence located in Valle de Bravo, Estado de México.
This project is more than just a house; it is an ode to nature and a testament to how architecture can merge seamlessly with its surroundings. The design was born out of a profound respect for the natural elements and landscape of the region. The central vision was to create a living space that directly connects with the surrounding treetops — elements that not only define the atmosphere of the home but also provide breathtaking views. The architecture of the house embraces the natural topography of the site. Instead of leveling the hilly terrain, the design integrates with the slope. This approach results in minimal excavation and an organic connection to the landscape. The public spaces of the home are intentionally elevated above ground level, creating platforms that offer diverse perspectives of nature, ranging from intimate nooks to open panoramas. On the ground floor, the bedrooms are designed with privacy and tranquility as key priorities. This layout ensures the house feels like a journey through nature: from the cocooning lower levels to the open, airy experience of the upper floors. Living in this residence is akin to climbing a mountain—with every step, new views and sensations unfold.
Here, architecture and nature merge into a unique sensory experience
The firm’s philosophy centers around an ‘architecture of ideas’ rather than forms. Their designs are shaped by the unique interplay with the environment, where geography, time, and use play pivotal roles. At Copas, these elements culminated in a design that is not only functional but also provides a sensory experience that engages the body and mind. By combining strong, simple geometry with deep respect for nature, the architecture strikes a balance between individuality and community. What truly sets this project apart is how its design embraces natural elements. Large windows, open floor plans, and carefully selected materials create a constant dialogue between the interior and the exterior. As a result, the house is not just a shelter but also a sanctuary that places the beauty of nature at its core.
With Copas, PPAA has once again demonstrated how architecture can build bridges between people and nature. This residence reminds us of the importance of living harmoniously with our surroundings and respecting them. The home is not just a visual masterpiece but also a space that celebrates the essence of living in balance with nature. Photography by Luis Garvan
