In one of the best-preserved traditional Danish villages north of Copenhagen, lies the characteristic Village School House. Situated amidst an idyllic landscape of forests, meadows, and with a stunning view of the isle of Ven and the Swedish coastline, this historic school offers a unique fusion of rustic charm and modern elegance. The property consists of two protected timber-framed farmhouses with thatched roofs, surrounded by a sprawling cottage garden with centuries-old trees that reflect the timeless beauty of the place.
In the main house, a bespoke kitchen by the Danish designer Kolon has been installed, serving as the heart of the home where the family gathers. The kitchen extends across the entire space and seamlessly integrates with the existing architecture. The design, crafted entirely from oak, with brass knobs and a stone countertop, strengthens the connection with nature outside the windows. Practical kitchen appliances are subtly integrated, ensuring a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics. The use of brass for the sink contributes to the coherence of the design and will only become more beautiful over time as it naturally patinates.
The primary goal of the renovation project was to create a strong connection between the old buildings while adapting the interior to suit modern family life. After living in bustling Manhattan for ten years, the family returned to the tranquility of the village. The interior blends historical and contemporary elements with respect for the site, exuding a tactile simplicity that echoes the history of the old school. A distinctive feature is the floating staircase in the hallway, elegantly zigzagging its way to the first floor with white plaster and oak steps, leading to a cozy TV room.
In the newly designed bathroom, the walls are covered with clay, creating a serene atmosphere reminiscent of nature. This sustainable plaster, made from Tadelakt, is an ancient Moroccan technique known for its water resistance and entirely natural composition. The material is derived from limestone in the surroundings of Marrakech and adds to the authentic character of the space.
A place where history and contemporary living seamlessly intertwine
The bathroom design is enhanced by elements from a previous 2015 project by Norm Architects, which featured minimalist bathroom and interior pieces created for the Italian brand Ex.t. The Scandinavian influences and inspiration drawn from northern landscapes provide a perfect balance of geometric purity, natural simplicity, and understated authenticity. The iconic bathtub from that collection now stands as the centerpiece of the newly renovated bathroom, offering a true retreat of calm and relaxation.
The Village School House embodies the perfect balance between tradition and modernity, where respect for heritage goes hand in hand with contemporary comfort and style.
