In the heart of Amsterdam, Amsterdam-based branding and interior design studio Instil Collective is redefining the way we experience spaces. By creating environments that promote well-being on multiple levels of our existence, their work transcends mere aesthetics and gets to the heart of human experience. Their most recent project, the newly opened Uncommon Bar in Oud-West, embodies this philosophy and offers a sensory experience beyond the typical bar environment.
Central to this project is the concept of ‘The Vibrant Network of Roots’, a guiding principle that reflects Uncommon's close relationships with its coffee producers. This metaphor emphasises that healthy, deep-rooted networks-both in nature and in human interactions-create resilience and nourishment. Just as the roots of a tree connect and support the entire ecosystem, a well-developed network of people, environments and ideas fosters a sense of connection and well-being. Instil Collective draws a parallel between this natural network and the human nervous system, highlighting how interconnectedness can lead to emotional and physical balance. When our ‘roots’ are healthy, we feel grounded and connected to ourselves, others and the spaces we inhabit.
Instil Collective's design approach goes beyond aesthetics. They collaborated with Brazilian neuroarchitect Andréa de Paiva to explore how physical environments affect our minds and bodies. Drawing from neuroarchitecture, the team integrated fractal patterns-natural, self-repeating shapes that the brain finds inherently soothing. These fractals, often found in trees, clouds and rivers, are replicated in the materials and textures of the bar, creating a space that feels both calming and natural. The human design philosophy of Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa also played a crucial role. His belief that visitors co-create a space through their personal experiences is a principle Instil deeply values. This is partly why Instil includes Collective branding in their design process-to tell the story of the space and thus strengthen the emotional connection that matches the physical environment.
The design also carefully integrates elements of Feng Shui to ensure harmony between natural forces. For example, the central bar is made of quartzite, chosen for its connection to the earth's geological history, which grounds the space. In contrast, Bogaji fabric art near the seating area evokes air, symbolising lightness and movement, while textured glass panels let in natural light that dances across surfaces like water. The wooden floor of the bar-with hand-carved organic, flowing lines-invites visitors to slow down and reconnect with themselves. Above the central bar, an undulating ceiling with natural light filtering down creates a distinction between the sky above and the earth below, encouraging visitors to reflect on their connection to the ground.
Every material and design element has been chosen to enhance the sensory experience
Each material and design element has been chosen to enhance the sensory experience. Hemp-infused plasterwork on the pillars adds texture and a tangible connection to nature, while metal accents in the furniture reflect durability and strength, balancing the softer, more organic elements of the space. These natural textures and patterns create a quiet rhythm through the space, gently encouraging visitors to engage with their surroundings on a deeper, more conscious level.
Instil Collective's focus on creating meaningful, sensory-driven spaces stems from their belief that attention and intention are essential to cultivating wellbeing. Just as meditation brings inner peace, a well-designed space can evoke a similar sense of calm by engaging the body, mind and subtle energy levels. This connection-between inner and outer worlds, people and their environments-is what makes Instil's approach unique.
The collaboration with Uncommon Bar also marks the beginning of a deeper exploration of how spaces affect human well-being. Instil Collective is currently setting up a research project to collect biofeedback and self-evaluation data from visitors, exploring how different design elements affect their physical and emotional states. This research will help Instil Collective refine their approach so that future projects continue to contribute to both the individual and collective well-being of those who experience them.
By combining art, nature, science and space, Instil Collective creates environments that are not only visually appealing but also deeply resonate with the human experience, creating a harmonious balance between aesthetics and well-being.
