Nestled in a quiet, tree-lined street in South West London, this unique home, a 20th-century Arts and Crafts house, has been completely transformed into a modern, serene living space. Serving both as a family home and a creative, professional retreat, it features an artist’s studio, a prayer room, a home gym, a cinema, and an office. What truly sets this house apart is the subtle yet strategic integration of natural light, an invaluable element in the often grey British capital.
The renovation of this remarkable residence was led by London-based interior architecture and design studio Gunter & Co. The homeowners, an artist and an avid art collector, brought a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and artistry to the process. To fully understand the family’s cultural background, the design team even travelled to India, drawing inspiration from traditional Indian influences and seamlessly weaving them into the interior. The vision extended beyond India, with curated shopping trips across London and Paris helping to source art and furniture that lend the home a refined and highly personal touch. The result is a balanced blend of heritage and contemporary elegance. 
What initially began as a relatively modest renovation, relocating the staircase, quickly evolved into a large-scale transformation. Almost the entire house was rebuilt, with the centrepiece being a striking three-storey entrance hall reminiscent of a contemporary art museum. This dramatic architectural feature not only showcases the homeowners’ extensive art collection but also creates a profound sense of space and light.
A home that tells stories
The interior design is defined by a neutral colour palette, providing the perfect backdrop for the family’s ever-growing art collection. These understated tones are complemented by rich, warm accents and an array of natural materials. High-quality finishes, such as oak, cast bronze, white Emperador marble, and Taj Mahal quartzite, play a key role in shaping the home’s aesthetic. One of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of the project was sourcing and installing the perfect stone for the ground floor, with over 50 slabs of natural stone meticulously polished to achieve a seamless matte finish. 
The homeowners’ love for art and craftsmanship led to the creation of several bespoke furniture pieces, many of which were handcrafted by skilled artisans in India. A standout feature is the custom-designed, three-part glass pendant installation by Charles Burnand, which casts an enchanting play of light throughout the space. Meanwhile, the cinema room, with its fabric-panelled walls cleverly concealing built-in speakers, demonstrates a carefully considered balance between technology and design. 
Despite its sleek, contemporary architecture, the home exudes warmth and tranquillity. The absence of skirting boards and cornices ensures a seamless flow between spaces, while polished plaster walls add a subtle, tactile depth. Large windows, thoughtfully positioned, invite an abundance of natural light, creating a serene and welcoming atmosphere. With its harmonious fusion of art, heritage, and modern design, this London home is more than just a residence, it is a meticulously crafted sanctuary where aesthetics and functionality come together. A true modern oasis in the heart of the city.
