Nestled among ancient olive trees and green canyons in the hills of Hollywood stands a Spanish-inspired home built nearly a century ago. What began as a charming 1926 house has been transformed by the vision of Jordana Maisie Design Studio (JMDS) into a harmonious interplay of architecture, interior design, lighting design and landscaping.
Australian architect and designer Jordana Maisie, with a background in orchestral music, photography and film, approaches each project with a strong sense of rhythm, light and imagination. After gaining experience at the renowned New York firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, she established her own studio in Los Angeles. Her work exudes an almost cinematic quality: light becomes a medium through which stories are revealed and spaces come to life.
For fashion entrepreneurs Natasha Shick and Tull Price, who moved to Los Angeles with their two sons, this house became a new beginning. Their wish: to respect the authenticity of their hundred-year-old Spanish home, but at the same time add a fresh, modern openness. Jordana's approach delivered exactly that: a dialogue between tradition and innovation.
Inside, the serene clarity of the architecture is enriched with craftsmanship and material perception.
The core of the design lies in the terracing. Inspired by the principles of Mexican master Luis Barragán, Jordana choreographed a sequence of levels that allow the house to dance with the landscape, as it were. Each staircase, wall and opening frames new views of the canyon and the city, inviting moments of reflection. Outside, the swimming pool, spa and garden merge into a Mediterranean retreat, where white stucco walls, terracotta tiles and geometric simplicity balance each other.
Inside, the serene clarity of the architecture is enriched with craftsmanship and materiality. Bespoke cabinets and furniture in mappa burl and red elm add warmth and depth, their organic textures contrasting beautifully with the clean white walls. Every detail, from vintage armchairs to carefully selected lighting, reinforces the feeling of a home where history and modernity coexist in harmony.
And then there is the light. In the afternoon, the house transforms into a living sundial: the low sun gently flares against the white stucco, shadows shift across the terraces and give the architecture an almost poetic layering. This daily spectacle makes the house not only a place to live, but also a place to experience.
The result is a project that embodies the essence of JMDS: architecture as a means to inspire wonder, create connection and bring the dialogue between people, space and nature to life. In the Hollywood Hills, a house has been created that is more than a renovation – it is a story of light, time and beauty.
